Retirement of UniProt Distributed Annotation System (DAS)

Not before December 9, 2015

The Distributed Annotation System (DAS) defines a communication protocol used to exchange annotations on genomic or protein sequences. It was first released in 2001 and UniProt has provided its data following the DAS protocol since July 2004. DAS has fulfilled a valuable role in integrating distributed and varied data, particularly for display in genome browsers and other applications that feature data visualisation, but unfortunately the current level of usage of DAS can no longer justify indefinite support and maintenance and we will therefore retire the UniProt DAS server at the end of 2015. Until then, the data will still be updated with every UniProt release.

Currently, the UniProt DAS server provides five data sources:

  • The UniProt Data Source provides data from UniProtKB, particularly protein sequences and protein sequence annotations such as motifs, sites, domains, etc.
  • The UniProt GO Annotations Data Source provides high quality Gene Ontology annotations to proteins in UniProtKB.
  • The UniProt Tryptic Data Source provides theoretical tryptic peptide annotations.
  • The UniProt Summary Data Source provides a summary including UniProtKB annotations and GO annotations.
  • The UniParc Data Source provides sequences from UniParc database.

Documentation on programmatic access to UniProt data can be found on the UniProt website.

Please contact us if you have questions about this change and how to best replace access to our data through DAS.
